What are thistles?

Thistles belong to the family of composite plants. Their name comes from the old German and means something like "thorn" or "spike". Thistles are especially noticeable for their spiny leaves and showy flower heads, to which they owe their name. Depending on the species, the flower heads can vary greatly in color. However, pink, purple and blue thistles are typical. Originally, thistles come from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Nowadays, however, they are equally known and native all over the world.

The blue beauty is very hardy. It grows even in barren soil and has long roots with which it can draw water from the depths of the soil. Because there are some species that spread very quickly, thistles are often perceived as weeds. However, this is not true of many varieties. Instead, they are even particularly beautiful to the eye and a reason more to buy thistles. In the summer we can be happy, because then the thistles begin to bloom. But you can also enjoy thistles outside of their blooming season.

The meaning of thistles

Thistles have various meanings. For example, they are the national symbol of Scotland and embody pride, strength and bravery. However, the thistles' spiny leaves combined with their ruggedness have also made them a symbol of savagery and resilience over time.

What types of thistles are there?

There are quite a few different thistle species and varieties. Among the best known species are mainly the following:

  • Ball thistle (Echinops)
  • Milk thistle (Silybum marianum)
  • Creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense)
  • Knapweed (Centaurea cyanus)
  •  Silver thistle (Carlina)
